How To install Metasploit on Windows 7/8/10 [64 bit]

Metasploit.

A very popular and powerful tool used by Ethical Hackers and penetration testers to hack into a system.

Metasploit provides a long list of exploits, modules that make the tool the most useful. Every beginner in the field of Ethical hacking starts with this tool.

But the problem is, it comes preinstalled only on the Linux distributions which are used for Ethical hacking and penetration testing such as Kali Linux, Parrot Security OS, Arch, etc.

Is Metasploit available for the Windows platform?

Yes! of course, it is available for the Windows platform. But it is not recommended to use the Windows platform as it has so many open ports and because of this, it has some very serious security flaws.

But for educational purposes, it is okay to use Windows for Ethical hacking.

Let's see how can we install the Metasploit framework on Windows 10.

Installing Metasploit on Windows 10

Fire up your Windows 10 machine, open up a browser and download the latest version of the Metasploit framework from Github. For now, the installer only supports 64bit Windows platform. You must pay attention to that. If you are using a 32bit Windows operating system, you may have to wait until the 32bit package releases.

After downloading the installer, launch it, accept the license agreement and click next to proceed with the installation of the framework.

But the Antivirus may not give permission to run this framework, don't worry rapid7 is a trusted organization. Disable the Antivirus to continue the installation. Also, in case if you want to use Metasploit over WAN, you have to either disable the firewall or allow it through the firewall.

At the step of choosing the path where you want the tool to be installed, be careful there. You must remember the path in order to launch the framework. Choose a short and easy to remember directory. Also, you can create a folder on another partition instead of the system partition.

After finishing the installation, you can access the Metasploit CLI through the command prompt.

Press Windows Start Key+R and type cmd and hit enter. It will open up the cmd.

Now, using 'cd' navigate to the directory where you've installed the Metasploit Framework.

Now type 'msfconsole' on the command prompt and hit enter.

Congrats! you've launched the Metasploit Framework successfully.

Let's Test it

The command lines you have to use are the same as used in the Linux platform. If you've never used Linux before, don't worry, we are here.

Let's keep it short.

Let's try creating a 'Meterpreter' session. Here we are targeting another Windows 10 machine for the demonstration.

First, we have to create a payload using 'Msfvenom'. Use the command given below to create your own payload.

Here we are generating a trojan giving an EXE file format with the name 'acrobat reader.exe'. You have to replace the Localhost with your local IP address.

To get your local IP address, open up the CMD and type 'ipconfig' and hit enter. There you go!

As we have created the payload successfully, its time to get to the next step. Now, we have to set up a reverse TCP listener.

Here we go! as the payload got clicked, a meterpreter session has opened and in the screenshot below you can see the system info.

Conclusion

These frameworks originally made for the Linux platform become very helpful when they are reconfigured to use them on the Windows platform.

Sometimes we cannot use or install Kali Linux for some reasons and in that case, these reconfigured tools help us a lot. Especially when we are using them for educational purposes, not to harm anyone.

Professionals never recommend using the Windows platform for these things but for educational purposes, it is okay.

What's your opinion? should we use the Windows platform for these things? let us know in the comment box.
